If you're middle-aged and your memory's not what it used to be, check the bathroom scale, researchers warned, suggesting overweight people tend to score more poorly on tests of memory than their thinner peers do.The findings suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life.Reporting in the journal Neurology, the researchers speculated that higher rates ofcardiovascular diseaseor diabetes might help explain the link. But it's also possible that substances produced by fat cells, such as the hormone leptin, have direct effects on the brain. The study compared mental abilities to body mass index (BMI), a measurement of weight in relation to height used to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25 or more indicates overweight, and 30 or more is obese. The study also investigated the relationships between BMI and cognitive function in 2,223 healthy men and women between the ages of 32 and 62 in France through the use of four cognitive tests. The study found a higher BMI was associated with lower cognitive test scores. Results from a test involving word memory recall show people with a BMI of 20 remembered an average of nine out of 16 words, while people with a BMI of 30 remembered an average of seven out of 16 words. /200809/47095

Therapist Frank Pittman believes virtually all cheaters deeply regret straying."Infidelity is the most devastating crisis for a family," said Pittman. "It creates an atmosphere of simmering anger, secrets and dishonesty," he says. Some estimates suggest half of divorces involve infidelity. But Pittman says couples can take preventive steps. Here are some pointers and tips:1. Stay faithful yourselfIf you don't want your spouse to stray, don't have an affair, either. Many affairs are sparked by revenge.2. Don't marry a cheaterIf your husband strayed from his former wife to be with you, then he could leave you for someone else.3. Normalize lustIt's OK to be attracted to other people; just don't act on it. It's also acceptable to let your spouse know you find a celeb attractive. But don't let your eye wander checking out every hottie that walks by.4. Don't share your marital woes with co-workersThey may be sick of hearing about it and say "If you don't like her, divorce her", just to be done with it. Or it can pull you and another disgruntled spouse closer together.5. If you're thinking about having an affair, the best thing you can do is telling your spouse."You can say, 'I have noticed we have not had sex in a year,' " says Pittman. This way they can work on intimacy issues and prevent the affair.6. Stay off the computerIf you are intimately connected to someone online, that's a red flag. Focus more on the intimacy in your relationship at home. Vocabulary:infidelity: unfaithful to a spouse(不忠贞)pointer: a piece of advice; a suggestion(意见;建议)be done with it: 把事情结束red flag: 危险信号 /200808/45966

Matt and his wife lived in the country. Matt was very stingy and hated spending money. One day a fair came to the nearby town. "Let's go to the fair, Matt," his wife said. "We haven't been anywhere for a long time." Matt thought about this for a while. He knew he would have to spend money at the fair. At last he said, "All right, but I'm not going to spend much money. We'll look at things, but we won't buy anything. " They went to the fair and looked at all the things to buy. There were many things Matt's wife wanted to buy, but he would not let her spend any money. Then, in a nearby field, they saw a small airplane. "Fun flights!" the notice said, " $ 10 for 10 minutes. Matt had never been in an airplane and he wanted to go on a fun flight. However, he didn't want to have to pay for his wife, as well. "I've only got $ 10, " he told the pilot. "Can my wife come with me for free?" The pilot wasn't selling many tickets, so he said, "I'll make a bargain with you. If your wife doesn't scream or shout, she can have a free flight." Matt agreed, and got into the small airplane with his wife. The pilot took off and made his airplane do all kinds of things. At one moment it was flying upside down. When the plane landed, the pilot said, "0. K. your wife didn't make a sound. She can have her ride free." "Thank you," Matt said. "It wasn't easy for her, you know, especially when she fell out." /201108/148223

An apple a day really could keep the doctor away – as long as you don’t throw away the peel. The chemical behind the apple skin’s waxy shine is being credited with a host of health benefits from building muscle to keeping the lid on weight. Ursolic acid also keeps cholesterol and blood sugar under control, meaning an apple a day could do wonders for all-round health. Researcher Christopher Adams said: ‘Ursolic acid is an interesting natural compound. It’s part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. The importance of apple peel was discovered after Dr Adams, a U.S. expert in how hormones affect the body, set out to find a drug that stops muscles from wasting, keeping pensioners strong as they age and cutting their risk of hard-to-heal fractures. He said: ‘Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and ageing. /201106/140044
