While Hong Kong film director Stephen Chow#39;s latest movie Mermaid has topped the box office with takings of 2.7 billion yuan (4 million) on Sunday, a Stephen Chow movie-themed restaurant opened recently has also became a hit among residents of Shanghai. Everything in the restaurant is related to Chow#39;s movies. Interior decoration includes posters while wall paintings reflect Chow#39;s on-screen persona. The and tableware also reminds people of scenes in Chow#39;s films. Dishes are named after characters or terms appearing in his work, sparking customers#39; imaginations as to what they may be served. Inside the Stephen Chow movie-themed restaurant. Placards movie titles and lines from Stephen Chow#39;s movies. A statue of martial artist Bruce Lee. Is your phone cooking your sperm? Maybe it’s guilt about overusing them, maybe it’s the shadow of cigarettes, maybe it’s just technophobia. Whatever it is, it seems like we won’t be happy until it’s proven that we’re being slowly exterminated by our phones. To be clear, mobile phones are small radio transmitters, which means they are too weak to damage your DNA but they can warm up the tissue they pass through – slightly – perhaps as much as 0.2C. Other things that risk warming your body include: eating dinner, exercising, a sunny day. Could there be some other danger we don’t know about, however? Erm … well we don’t know. Here are some of the theories that have been floated – and sunk. Do phones cause male infertility? New research from Israel found lower sperm counts and motility among men who were heavier phone users, suggesting that “certain aspects of cellphone usage may have adverse effects on sperm concentration”. There have been similar studies before, and heat does affect sperm production. However, this study involved questionnaires filled out by 106 men who had aly been referred for semen analysis at Carmel Medical Centre in Haifa. That isn’t very many men, so it could easily be a chance result. Nor is it good evidence anyway, since men who use their phone a lot might also be unusual in other areas, and it might be those areas, not their phone, that are responsible. Do phones cause eye cancer? In 2001, a German doctor, Andreas Strang, found that rates of mobile phone use were much higher among a group of 118 uveal melanoma patients than in a control group. This was widely reported around the world, even though Dr Strang himself advised people not to take it too seriously. The results haven’t been repeated, and Cancer Research UK does not consider phones an eye cancer risk. /201603/430222

If you got the bus to work this morning rather than walking, don#39;t feel guilty. A study suggests those who commute by bus or train are healthier than those who walk. It isn#39;t clear why but it may be that when the walk to the bus or train station is factored in, those who take public transport are actually getting more exercise. The counterintuitive finding comes from a study of 6,000 Japanese adults who underwent a battery of health tests and provided information on their commute. Those who took the bus or train were deemed to be the fittest – they were the slimmest, had the best blood pressure and were the least likely to have diabetes. Importantly, those who took public transport were 40 per cent less likely to be diabetic overall and 26 per cent less likely to be diabetic than the walkers. Those who walked or cycled were next healthiest, while those who drove to work were in the worst shape, the American Heart Association#39;s Scientific Sessions meeting in Florida heard. A spokesman for the association said: #39;While it#39;s aly established that a physically active lifestyle helps reduce the likelihood of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, it is unclear whether these risk factors for heart disease and stroke are affected by how you get to work. Study author Dr Hisako Tsuji, of the Moriguchi City Health Examination Centre in Osaka, said it was impossible to tell if taking public transport improves health or if bus and train passengers are simply healthier to begin with. However, Japanese city-dwellers tend to only walk or bike to work if the journey will take under 20 minutes or so. As a result, when travel to and from station is taking into account, bus and train passengers may be walking and cycling further than those who walk or bike their entire journey. Dr Tsuji said: #39;Active modes of commuting to work may be important physical activity in countries where lifestyles have become sedentary. #39;People should consider taking public transportation instead of a car, as a part of daily, regular exercise.“人们应考虑乘坐公共交通工具而不是自己驾车,作为日常规律锻炼的一种形式。”#39;It may be useful for healthcare providers to ask patients about how they commute.#39;“对医疗务提供者来说,询问病人他们的通勤方式也许能提供有用的信息。”Dr Jorge Plutzky, of the American Heart Association, cautioned against ing too much into the results. But he added that the study throws up the idea that #39;activity, even when modest and integrated into one#39;s lifestyle like how you get to work, and the walking before and after you#39;re getting there, could matter#39;. /201511/409535

There#39;s no simple answer to what constitutes #39;smart#39;. These days, we#39;re inclined to think you can#39;t go by intelligence ient (IQ) results alone, because while these tests are great for measuring separate mental faculties, an IQ number doesn#39;t seem to predict overall intelligence accurately enough.“聪明”的组成要素是什么? Then there is also a measurement called general intelligence or #39;g factor#39;. It was first described by English psychologist Charles Spearman in 1904, and refers to the phenomenon that children who tend to do well at one subject also tend to excel at others; in simple terms, there is a positive correlation between kids#39; performance in unrelated school tests, which is referred to as a #39;positive manifold#39;. Another commonly cited and prestigious comparison system is PISA, which measures ;the competencies of 15-year-olds in ing, mathematics, and science (with a focus on mathematics) in 65 countries and economies;, representing more than 80 percent of the world economy. According to the latest PISA from 2012, Shanghai-China students are the highest performers across the board, with above OECD-average scores in mathematics, ing, and science. You#39;ll also find super-smart kids in Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Japan, Korea, and Finland. /201510/406566
